The Tulsa Latino Theater Company proudly presents “Locuras en Wichita” (Wild In Wichita), as part of the Tulsa Fringe Festival 2015.
“Locuras en Wichita” (Wild in Wichita) is an unconventional romantic comedy that deals with serious issues of aging in a way that blends comedy with tears. It’s the story of an elegant Puerto Rican woman and a Mexican bad boy who fall in love at an assisted living center in Wichita, Kansas — much to the disapproval of their adult children. The play is in English.
A strange and magical journey brought this play to Tulsa for this year’s Fringe Festival. The death of Lina Gallegos, the playwright, as well as a death in the family of the TLTC’s Artistic Director, Shadia Dahlal, brought Lina’s son and Shadia together in California. While researching the play, Shadia learned Gallegos had just passed away a month earlier. Shadia was invited to her memorial service at Redondo Beach,
California, and as she had to be in California that same weekend for a funeral, it all came together. She met Frank Perez, the playwright’s son, and as they say, the rest is history.
“Locuras en Wichita” has received several awards, including the MetLife Voces/National Latino Plays Initiative and the Ola Award for Outstanding Achievement in Playwriting.
The cast includes Eduardo Mora as Joaquin, Shadia Dahlal as Carmela, Eduardo Saucedo as Raul, and Maria Carmona as Lillian.
Mabel Sanchez will direct.
